The Making of The Menagerie Parts 1 & 2. | How Star Trek Turned a Rejected Pilot into It’s Past

Spock's court-martial concealed one of Star Trek's cleverest production solutions: turning the unused first pilot into two new episodes—and the Enterprise's own history.

Trek World explores the making of The Menagerie, Parts I and II: the contingency plan that preceded the scheduling crisis, John D. F. Black's abandoned framing script, Sean Kenney's demanding performance as Pike, the compressed editing timetable, and the deleted scene that nearly exposed Spock through Vulcan perspiration.

Featuring surviving scripts, contemporary publicity, production photography, a screen-used costume, and an early fan review that did not overlook the story's rough edges. We also revisit the 1986 home-video release that let viewers examine the pilot outside Kirk's courtroom.

Participant recollections are identified as recollections. Sources and visual provenance accompany the production package.
