Michael Westmore’s arrival on Star Trek: The Next Generation seemed like a routine behind-the-scenes hiring decision in 1987. In hindsight, it helped define the look of 24th century Star Trek for nearly two decades.
This video explores how Westmore’s makeup work shaped the visual identity of The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, and some of Star Trek’s most iconic alien civilizations—from Klingons and Ferengi to Cardassians, Borg, Jem’Hadar, and beyond.
Based on behind-the-scenes history from The Fifty-Year Mission, we look at why practical makeup mattered so much to Star Trek’s storytelling, how alien design helped build believable cultures, and why one quiet creative hire became one of the franchise’s most important decisions.
